Bulimba

Brisbane

Family home for 5

About

Bulimba house was designed for a family of five, including  three teenagers at the time. It is situated on a steep, inner-suburban site with both park & city views.

Resolution

The design provides visual links between indoor & outdoor spaces as well as more discreet links between public & private domains. These were established so that spaces could be both inclusive & private, enhancing interaction between family whilst also respecting privacy needs between parents & teenage children.

Strategies were developed to ensure physical connection between internal & external spaces & garden, overcoming a common challenge arising from Brisbane's hilly terrain.

To this end a three-story arrangement was developed, housing garages at the lower level, living spaces on the mid-ground level & the more private bedroom spaces at the upper level.

Climate

The shallow plan depth together with full-height glass doors to living spaces combine to ensure a high level of cross ventilation whilst exterior blinds, sun hoods & overhangs ensure minimal impact from the sun. Deeply shaded outer & inner entry spaces cool the prevailing breezes as they enter the house.

Outcome

Considered spatial & social planning has resulted in a generous family home that successfully balances the intricate & evolving dynamics of family life with teenagers, whilst establishing physical connection with whole of site and beyond.

Traditional owners of the land

We pay respect to the Turrbal and Yuggera (Jaggera) people who have lived in this area for around 20,000 years & on whose land this house has been built & the suburb of Bulimba has been established.
