Gordon Park

Brisbane

Family home for 4

About

Gordon Park house was a family home 'bursting at the seams'. This three-bedroom, one-bathroom Queenslander needed to expand to five bedrooms plus an extra bathroom.

Due to the steeply sloping site, the ideal solution was to raise & build under, but a logical location for the internal stair had delayed previous attempts to extend.

Resolution

A 'stair pod' was added to the eastern side of the home to house the new internal stair. This enabled the stair to vertically connect the upper level living spaces  with the lower level teenagers' new living space &, in turn, with the new lap pool in the back yard.

Climate

The north-east facing stair pod windows along with the heat chimney effect created by the two-storey stair void, has significantly improved the climatic performance of the original home.

Outcome

The 'stair pod' design solution unlocked spatial & social outcomes, linking adults with teenagers and house with gardens &  pool. This home has successfully balanced the intricate & evolving dynamics of family life as young teenagers transition to young adults.
