If you’ve ever searched ‘Tips for Aging in Place’, you’ll quickly see it’s less than appealing: grab rails, non-slip strips, ramps with handrails up to your front door, and other confronting design elements are featured all too often. So, no wonder many people don’t adequately plan ahead. Here are my 5 TIPS FOR AGING IN PLACE 1. Understand YOUR PLACE in aging in place
One size does not fit all. There are so many choices and options sitting between the family home and an apartment or retirement village
2. Make provisions for ACCESSIBILITY – we all should anyway regardless of age and current situation, AND
It needn’t cost more, or be unsightly
You could break a leg, for example, at any time in your life, or you may have a grandchild or a friend with a disability
3. PLAN AHEAD
Moving unexpectedly and under duress shortens lives, reduces choice and breaks up partners and families. Too often, I have seen this happen. It is heartbreaking
4. Never underestimate the importance of SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT
Identify your ‘tribe’: Being with people of a similar age is not, in itself, enough commonality
If relocating, do so earlier, giving yourself time to form strong social networks and really settle in when your resilience is at its best
5. Understand YOUR SELF
What 'rocks YOUR boat'?
What excites you, what gets you up in the morning? Be where thee things happen and with others who share your passions.
This is no different to planning your living environment for babies or teenagers, or simply a life together with someone special to you.
Life needn't be a series of stages, some better than others, but rather a continuum. Embrace it all.
